DIAMOND HEAD FEE REVENUE TO STAY

Revenues collected from entry fees to Diamond Head State Park should stay within the budget to maintain the park. One of my bills, SB 138 originally sought to exclude all fees from the use of Diamond Head Monument. The fees currently generate nearly $1 million annually but the bulk of the revenues go to maintain other parks. In the Water, Land and Agriculture committee, my bill was amended (SD1) to allow a fee but to require that not less than 55% of money collected remain with Diamond Head maintenance, renovation and to operate a visitor education center.

LET HONOLULU VOTE

Let Honolulu Vote (LHV), a citizens grassroot organization created to put initiative back into the City Charter and on the ballot, launched their 2007 campaign on January 19. This year the goal is "to place tax questions on future City ballots, using initiative". The group is gathering more than 40,000 signatures from registered voters in order to get initiative enacted into the city charter through the amendment process. For more information, go to their website lethonoluluvote.org.

Bob Kessler and Paul Smith, the co-chairs of LHV will talk about the initiative drive on Malia Zimmerman's "News Behind the News" program on Olelo Channel 54 this coming Monday, February 19 at 6PM.
